A Search for Purpose…

As I was considering what to share in this week’s blog, I looked at my dog lying by my chair sleeping. She does not have a care in the world. Her days are spent napping, eating, and roaming the house waiting for everyone to come home from school and work so she can be rubbed and loved. It is a simple life. She lives for the rubs, the treats and the surprise walks around the block. What would you say is her purpose?

An article in Harvard Health Publications says “Studies going back to the early 1980s support the idea that dogs—and other pets—have enormous health benefits for people. Pets have been shown to lower blood pressure, improve recovery from heart disease, and even reduce rates of asthma and allergy in children who grow up with a Fido or a Frisky in the house. Pets also improve people’s psychological well-being and self-esteem.” Sophie certainly does all those things for our family. Without knowing it Sophie brings calm, fun, and stress relief after a long day at work. In the midst of the walks she enjoys, she is serving her purpose.

What is your purpose? What have you been called to do? The answer to this question is often elusive for people. There is the struggle between what you are good at or what your job is and what you are truly called to do. Each of us is placed on this earth for a reason; to accomplish something that will impact one or many. Unfortunately, it takes many of us a life time to understand or acknowledge our purpose. I talk about this struggle in my book Faith to Conquer Fear: Inspiration to Achieve your Dreams. I have personally found the biggest hurdle keeping people from walking in their purpose is fear. It is fear of the unknown, fear of change, and fear of the “what if” that keeps people from accepting what many already know about their purpose. If you are honest with yourself, I think you will find you already know your purpose and what you are called to do. It can be seemingly elusive to some, but to others who already know, it is a choice. Regardless of whether you are still searching or you are in denial, the longer you choose to delay, the less time you have to impact. Pray for and acknowledge your purpose. The world is waiting!
